Longacre’s new type with a small Indian Head design on the obverse and revised agricultural wreath on the reverse was introduced in 1854 for Philadelphia Mint issues. The following year saw examples struck at all operating facilities east of California, with 1856 only seeing production in San Francisco for this Type II gold dollar. This New Orleans Mint issue was struck to the extent of 55,000 coins with only a handful of Mint State survivors.

Provenance:
Purchased from Rowe and Brownlee, February 24, 1967.
Obverse:
Type II design. Small Indian Princess Head faces left, wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters. Around, the statutory legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Longacre's initial, L, is on the bust truncation, however, this tiny letter is generally very hard to see.
Reverse:
An agricultural wreath of corn, cotton, maple leaves, and other leaves. This wreath is tied at the bottom by a ribbon with double bow, very slightly open at the top. The wreath encloses 1 DOLLAR and the date. Mintmark for branch mint coins is below the ribbon knot.
Commentary:
"V1c."
