This exciting half eagle has the widely spaced denomination discussed above at HBCC-3123. The variety is relatively plentiful with a number of Mint-State examples known, but this Bass Collection half eagle is clearly double struck with the initial strike off center. The most noticeable doubling on the obverse is visible on the bust of Liberty, and represents stars from the first strike. Lines from the cap are visible along the obverse border at upper left. The reverse has considerable evidence of the initial strike, especially including evidence of the eagle’s head on the shield of the final strike.
