Like the Dahlonega Mint issue, this example is the only three-dollar gold coinage date struck in New Orleans. Although 24,000 were struck, very few high quality survivors are known. While the mint at Dahlonega was a specialty facility, producing only gold coinage, the New Orleans Mint also coined silver issues and remained in operation, intermittently, until 1909. The reverse die has been lapped, a polishing process designed to eliminate clash marks and other small defects. The process also removed certain shallow design elements, including fine details of the wreath.

Purchased from Joe Flynn, Sr. Coin Co., July 31, 1973.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: J.B.L. truncated. Reverse: Small DOLLARS. Severely lapped. Left interior leaf but a small remnant, that on right gone. Ribbon tops gone at left and lower right. Shallow, thin mintmark. No cracks."
