The Proof mintage of this issue totaled 50 coins, with 25 struck March 5, 1867 and the other 25 coined July 2, 1867. That two different die varieties exist led Walter Breen to speculate that the first variety, with an obverse die used since 1865, were those struck March 5, and the other variety with obverse also used in 1868, were the coins minted July 2. Approximately 20 Proofs survive today, including examples in the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society.
