This pattern issue features the same obverse die presented at HBCC-6099, with a revised reverse design proclaiming this to be a “trade dollar.” Essentially, the concept was the same as the commercial dollar, to promote trade with the Orient. The reverse features a wreath with the denomination, statutory legend, and motto on a scroll. The addition of the weight and fineness, expressed on two lines as 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE was included to promote confidence among the oriental parties who would receive these coins.
