This is the wide date obverse of 1833 and is far more plentiful than either of the close date varieties at HBCC-3162 or 3163. The reverse die is the same as used for certain examples of 1832 and 1833 with period distant from D in the denomination. Possibly as many as 50 examples of this variety are known. Two or three Proofs are known with a few other Mint-State examples including this Bass Collection coin.

Provenance:
Purchased from Stanley Kesselman, March 9, 1970.

Commentary:
"Obverse: Widely spaced date. Small stars. Tall 1, its top clearly above that of 8. Symmetrical 8. Punch for 3s used previously, its center point having a thin horizontal projection. Star 1 distant from bust. No cracks. Reverse: That of 1832A. Small 5 and D - top of 5 concave. Oblate period quite distant. Rear talon beneath top leaves pair now an unattached lump. Die center punch lump in shield. I beneath T. Arrow tip beneath I. No rust lumps. Heavy lapping continues."
