This is the rarest of four 1795 varieties with 13 leaves in the reverse branch. The obverse is quickly recognized by the upper left star joining the cap. Under microscopic examination, this star does not quite touch the cap. Approximately 50 examples of this die marriage are known, with the Bass Collection coin among the five or six finest. This Bass Collection coin is from the Louis Eliasberg Collection and carries a pedigree to the Nicholas Petry Collection sold by S.H. and H. Chapman in 1893.

Provenance:
From the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of the Louis Eliasberg Collection, October 1982, Lot 644. Earlier from the Chapman Brother's sale of the Nicholas Petry Collection, May 1893.
